How To Videos:How to Open a Roll Off Dumpster Rental

Play Video

A roll-off dumpster has a swing door at the back so you can walk or wheel heavy items straight in instead of lifting them over the side. The short video above shows how easy it is to book a bin. Below is how to open and close the rear door safely, plus what goes in, how much weight is included, where to put it, and what it costs. Questions? Call Budget Bins at (818) 355-9597.

Opening and closing the rear door safely

  1. Check the bin is sitting flat. A door on a bin that's on a slope can swing hard once it's unlatched.
  2. Stand to the side, not in front of the door. Keep kids and pets well back.
  3. Release the latch and swing the door all the way open so it can't drift shut while you're loading.
  4. Load heavy items first, toward the front, and spread the weight evenly.
  5. Close and re-latch the door before pickup. Our driver can't haul a bin with an open or unlatched door.

Never open the door if debris is piled against it, and don't pry at a stuck latch. Call us and we'll walk you through it.

Renting a roll-off, step by step

  1. Pick a size (see the table below). If you're not sure, tell us what you're throwing away and we'll tell you what fits.
  2. Give us your address and zip code. Pricing depends on your zip code and bin size.
  3. Choose a spot for the bin: driveway, yard, job site or curb.
  4. Fill it within your rental period. Every bin includes 8 days. Extra days are $40 ($25 for 3 yard bins).
  5. Call or book your pickup when you're done, with the door closed and latched.

What you can and can't put in

  • Mixed trash bins (3 to 40 yard): household junk, furniture, yard waste, remodel and construction debris.
  • 10 yard clean inert bin: clean inert materials only: dirt, rock, concrete and brick. Keep trash out of this bin.
  • Not allowed in a standard bin: hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, chemicals, fuel and batteries. Ask us before adding tires, since there's a per-tire fee.
  • Don't fill above the top edge. An overfilled bin can't be hauled safely.

How much weight is included

  • 3 yard bins: 800 lb included, then $16 per 100 lb over.
  • 9, 10, 16, 25 and 40 yard mixed trash bins: 1 ton included, then $120 per ton over.
  • 10 yard clean inert bin: 13 tons included (clean inert only), then $120 per ton over.

Heavy debris like roofing, tile and plaster adds up fast. If your job is mostly heavy material, ask us which bin keeps you under the included weight.

Where to put it: driveway and placement tips

  • Pick a flat, firm spot with clear access for a roll-off truck, and no low branches or wires overhead.
  • Lay down boards or plywood where the bin sits if you want to protect your driveway.
  • Keep the rear door side clear so it can swing fully open.
  • Move cars out of the way on delivery and pickup days.
  • If the bin needs to go on the street or sidewalk, your city may require a permit. Rules vary by city, so check with your city before delivery.
